Çemberlitaş

No traces of Forum of Constantine the Great,
which was the nearest square to Hippodrome during Roman Empire,
could be found. This square which, then, was surrounded with the
senate and important official departments, today hosts buildings
erected during the Ottoman and Republic period. The only work in
the square remaining from that period is Cemberlitag, known as
the Burnt Column (Column of Constantine).
On top of this column of 50 m. height, which was built in the
4th century with the instruction of Emperor Constantine the
Great, was a bronze statue until 1105. The height of this
porphyry column is 37 m. today because of the previous
earthquakes and |

fires. The metal rings have been used to
increase its resistance.
Below its high pedestal, holy remnants which
were brought to the city with the instruction of Constantine,
like the pieces of the True Cross, the stone which Moses had
broken with his stick and get water out of it are believed to
exist. It faced an complete restoration in 1955. |
