Galata to Rumeli Feneri
|
|
 |
When we start to tour in Galata, where the
Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus, we can find out the natural and
historical beauties on the European side. The Karakoy Pier,
passengers harbor of the city, comes after the Maritime Lines
management
next to the Galata Bridge. The pier was built in 1894, and made
it possible for Galata, which was the financial and trade center
in the Ottoman period, to establish trade links with the world.
In the district of Tophane, the building left of the coastal
highway, is the Cannonry, which was built |
|
with order of Kanuni
over of the ruins of the buildings dating back to the Mehmet IPs
period. Similarly, the name of the district is derived from this
early cannonry of the Ottomans.
At the opposite of the Cannonry is the Kihc Ali Pasha Mosque,
which was built in 1580 by the Architect Sinan for Admiral Kihc
Ali Pasha. Next to the mosque is the Tophane Fountain, which
built with the order of Sultan Mahmud I; this fountain was
completely ruined as a result of a fire, and restored in 1957.
It has a rich decoration. Next to the green Tophane Summer
Palace, which was built by English Architect James Smith in the
1850's, is the Nusretiye Mosque, which is one of the most
beautiful baroque mosques in the city. The
mosque has two thin minarets with two balconies, and a dome. It
was built under the auspices of Mahmud II by architect Kirkor
Balyan in the first half of the 19th century. After passing by
Kabatag, which has grown into a center of marine transportation
with the piers for ferries and sea-busses. |
