Kumkapý

Kumkapi, which is the first district on the coastline after passing Kadirga (galley) District which takes its name from the Kadirga Harbour where great galleys of the Ottoman fleet drew up alongside, attracts attention with its huge fresh fish market and fish restaurants. This district known as Kondoskali which means 'small quay' in the Byzantine period is one of the most vivid entertainment centers of Istanbul today. Visitors who want to have fresh fish and special sea food of Turkish cusine must spend an evening in this district. As in Kadirga, there are several churches in this district where Armenians were living

during the Ottoman period.

The first large cross-roads after Kumkapi is Yenikapi. Ataturk boulevard passing along the historical peninsula and reaching the Unkapani Bridge above the Golden Horn joins with the coastline here. This was the point where Lygos (Bayrampaga) Lake was flowing into Marmara.

Going further from Yenikapi towards the coastline, the first district we face is Samatya. There are many small and big churches like Ayios Theodoros Church, Sulu Monastery or Surp Kevork Church which was the old Armenian Patriarch, Ayios Menos Church and Hristos Analipsis Church.

The walls in the vicinity of Samatya sometimes go towards the left side of the coastline, seaside, and gives an idea about the natural coastline of ancient period. Narhkapi, the last gate on the sea walls before the Yedikule Hisan (castle) was the door used by those who came by sea to visit Studion Monastery right behind.
