Land walls of around 6 km. length were
constructed under the supervision of Anthemios, governor of the
city. The highest point of the walls strengthened by % towers
were 76 m. above the sea level. There are 46 small and big gates
along the land walls which provide connection with the city.
There is a ditch of 20 m. in width and 10 m. in depth before the
walls. Behind, there are two courses of walls the outer one of
which is 7 m. and the inner 11 m. in height. There is a distance
of 10 m. between these two rows of walls. Towers having 50 - 75
m. distance are 25 m. in height. After the Yedikule Castles come
large gates like Belgrad Gate, Silivri Gate, Mevlevi Gate,
Topkapi and Edirnekapi respectively. |
