To the opposite of the Galata Bridge, there
is a short tunnel which connects the district of Galata with the
district of Beyoglu. This subway which was built between
1871-1976 by French engineer Eugene Henry Gavand, who after
preparing its plan established a joint venture with the English
businessmen. It is the third oldest and the shortest in length
in the world. The subway, in which it is possible to travel 570
m. in 2 minutes, is now operated by the Municipality. |
